Posture is an often overlooked and easily correctable cause of back and neck pain. Speaking from personal experience, it can also be the difference between a lasting first impression or an awkward and hopefully forgettable moment with a cute stranger of the female variety. Certain people that I have noticed have a bigger tendency to slouch or have this S-shape posture (chest in, gut out, and neck down) are gloomy teenagers, long-haired beat-nicks, and just about ANYONE that sits in an office chair 8 hours a day. I can’t even begin to tell you how much easier it was to stand up straight when I moved boxes in a warehouse.
A simple trick to get you to cock up that chest and drop your shoulders is by literally restricting the exact posture that encourages your muscles to rest at such positions. A yoga bolster or comfort pillow can help when used properly. Place the yoga bolster or comfort pillow on the lower backside of your back between the back rest and your back on your office chair. This can help by forcing you to lean back towards your chair and make you drop your shoulders. Also, proper stretching in the morning and the evening can help greatly with the office-workout stress on your muscles with some simple stretches. Using yoga mats or any type of exercise mats when stretching makes it much more comfortable.
“I just watched George Harrison: Living In The Material World this week. Not only is it an awesome documentary, but it goes into great detail on George’s transformation from rock and excess extraordinaire to contemplative, meditative, universal traveller. While it touches on all aspects of George Harrison’s life, the details of meeting, along with the other Beatles, the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi stuck out to me the most. Not just because there are sequences in the film where it ‘looks’ like they’re using a silk meditation cushion of ours (the footage is from ‘67 and I don’t think the owner’s of the company were born yet or were in diapers at the most), but because they make an excellent case for the merits of meditation outside of the realm of “mysticism†or “new age†philosophies which, in and of themselves, can carry a sort-of smeared image due to too many late night whackos offering enlightenment for 4 easy payment of $19.95.
In any case, if you are looking to get into ‘that space’ of thoughtlessness (VERY different from alcohol induced carelessness), our mediation pillow selection and our meditation cushion are excellent tools for beginners and advanced practitioners alike. Our silk varieties even have beautiful ornate patterns if the ambiance is essential to get into that zone (or should I say zen state). We also offer yoga bolster choices (great for other positions outside of lotus), blankets, or even silk eye pillows if you’re like me and have a hard time keeping your eyes closed or still from fidgeting. If you have never attempted controlled meditation, I highly recommend you take time from your busy schedule to find a quiet, comfortable space, and BREATHE DEEPLY, recite your mantra (it’s different for everyone) and enjoy the bliss of pure thoughtlessness.“
