As of late, I’ve grown increasingly aware of the fact that I am getting old. Not old-old, but old like an adult. 3rd floor of life. Where you start reflecting on the fact that you should have been a little more athletic just so your body was conditioned for the hardships of being an American citizen for the next 50 years. Ok, ok, 30 if I’m lucky.
Heavily bombarded with fast food, fast cars, and fast women, it is no wonder our indulgent lifestyle makes it so easy to forget very basic things like regular physical activity. After all, the body wasn’t exactly designed to sit at cubicle trying to think of blogs to write… hmmm…
I’ve become increasingly more interested in keeping my body in shape. Not for looks, but merely for endurance, stamina, and vigor… IN BED! BOOYAH! Seriously, though… life in general. Regular physical activity be it buying a yoga mat and start doing yoga, jogging by myself, getting a few martial arts mats to wrestle with my girlfriend, or just taking the stairs instead of the elevator can substantially improve my metabolism, sleep, and my mood overall. Another big commitment is cutting out ALL sodas. That crap is BAD for you! No more Diet Coke for me! Or Squirt.. or Fanta… or regular Coke. (Beer is NOT soda by the way!)
Take it from someone that has been blessed with a pretty amazing metabolism (I have literally bombarded my body with just about anything you can throw at it for the past 30 years… and I still maintain a happy median weight of 185 lbs at 6’4″), things start to change after the last half of the second decade. If you are feeling the 3rd floor blues, consider taking something up cycling, yoga, martial arts, or cross-fit. One of the very distinct perks of working here has been the employee discounts on a variety things like work-out gloves, yoga equipment, martial arts products, and exercise mats. If you need a bit of a push in the right direction, remember that the body is like a car. Always lease, never buy. Wait, that’s not right… Oh yes, you’re body is like a car and it won’t last forever. But the more regular maintenance you give it, the more mileage you’ll get out of it.

Unchecked male aggression is one of my pet peeves. All the macho with none of the class. When our reptilian brain beckons daily to just eat and breed, it’s no wonder the addition of entertainment on demand to our latest generation of teens and pre-teens can help provoke some of our less self-disciplined cubs to bully, steal, or just be all around jerks. Not only that, but add the pressures of social expectations in the face of adversity for many and you have a recipe for what seems to be a never-ending news feed of disenfranchised youths taking to recreational drugs, a stance against critical thought and educational institutions of any sort and in the worst cases, violence towards others.
I recently spoke to a customer who is working in the one of the poorest counties in the state of Kansas and is taking it upon himself to start a free youth wrestling program. His program is aimed at teaching kids discipline, poise, and most importantly, self-control through the likes of wrestling mats. I couldn’t help but be a bit moved by the idea given that when I was growing up, programs like that greatly affected me and really did keep me deterred from expressing my more troublesome tendencies in an outwardly destructive ways.
Now I was never very athletic, but I distinctly remember how after-school programs that offered Tae Kwon Do, soccer, and even roller hockey, offered an alternative to the pressures of being a teenager in a low-income neighborhood where aside from staying indoors playing video-games and listening to music, there was little incentive for the ‘nerdy’ kids to go outside and socialize. Through a little positive influence and motivation from young adults such as this customer and mentors, kids can turn to martial arts, wrestling, exercise, and even using yoga products (which I have seen more and more recently especially here in Southern California) to make new friends, stay active, healthy, and build confidence and self-discipline.
MatsMatsMats.com is always happy to offer additional discounts to various local and volunteer funded programs on just about all our inventory from martial arts mats or exercise flooring to a yoga mat or meditation products. If you, much like many of these mentors and willing individuals, wish to make a difference in your community, give us a call and we’d be more than happy to help. While generally we don’t have second-hand items or donations available, we offer highly competitive pricing and might even be able to point you in the right direction if we don’t have exactly what you are looking for.

We have one of the largest selections of folding mats. These are generally used as gymnastic tumbling mats, but we have customers that use them for everything from an exercise mat to martial arts mats.
Not only do we have a huge variety of sizes and styles we can create custom folding mats to the size you would like. And if you don’t want velcro tabs, no problem. We recently just added two more styles to our selection.  They are for the girls out there and one has flowers and the other has hearts on the mat.  One thing that makes these mats so popular is that you can set them up when in use and then fold them up and put them in your closet or storage area when done.
So, when you get a chance, please take a look at the variety of what we offer and if you need a special mat size not shown or any assistance just let us know matsmatsmats.com.

Olympics… gotta love it! As someone who sells martial arts mats, judo mats and wrestling mats for a living I never understood why judo didn’t get more coverage here in the United States? Maybe that’s because before today the USA has never won a gold medal in Judo? Well, thanks to Kayla Harrison who won the first Olympic Gold medal in judo for the USA in the women’s 78-kilogram title, that will no longer be the case. Kayla is a 22-year-old with an inspirational story.
As a teenager Harrison tried to run away from home and considered suicide after suffering in silence through three years of sexual abuse at the hands of her first competitive judo coach. Thank goodness, Kayla got a second chance at judo… and life.
She moved from a small town in Ohio to a suburb of Boston and became part of an elite judo program.  Her coach, Jimmy Pedro, a two-time Olympic medalist said “The American media have really embraced her. They followed her. They’re going to eat her up from here until forever. She’s a good, good person. Cares about other people. Always willing to give back. She has an attitude of gratitude. And there’s nobody more deserving than her to climb to the top of podium. She never skips a practice, she never skips a run, a lift.”
In an effort to inspire others from suffering as she did, Harrison has talked openly about her past. She now hopes to inspire others to give judo.  ”I hope that America loves my story and hopefully a little girl or a little boy sees it and says, ‘Wow, mom I want to do that,’” Kayla said.
Way to go Kayla Harrison!

At no fault of my own, I was dragged to an 80′s looking, Double-Impact*-reminiscent bar called the… well, let’s not call out the bar itself. Let’s just say it’s local (a bit TOO local), drinks are cheap, and I fear that at some point, I’ll make a biker there very angry which will promptly force me on my back (by way of bottle or fist) at some point in the evening. The really important thing to note, is that my bartender (let’s call him Justin) knows I sell mats for a living and likes to poke fun at me for it. Most people find it VERY interesting that there is a dedicated website that sells all kinds of mats.
The usual Thursday night rush poured in as we discussed his training (he is a very skilled Jeet Kune Do practitioner) and tunes when he was about a second away from taking a nasty spill… at least it seemed. Turns out that (like most bars and restaurants) he’s got rubber drainage mats
to keep employees from slipping. I couldn’t see the bar anti fatigue mats
, but like I mentioned in a previous post, once you see certain things, you can never un-see them. Now I realize that these things are literally IN EVERY RESTAURANT OR BAR I WALK INTO. It wasn’t enough that I began to think about OUR martial arts mats
while nerding out about Bruce Lee and Wing Chun, but as I took my last drink of the night, I was already thinking about the anecdote that had just materialized in my head from this outing.

You can have custom martial arts mats made to order instead of settling for standard exercise mats beneath you and your students when people hit the floor. Martial arts mats made to order are manufactured a special way so as to better absorb the greater impact associated with martial arts moves, exercises, and throws.
The cross-linked polyethylene foam filler in these mats provide superior durability and resilience to use and are much more resistant to breakdown than ordinary exercise mats, and are perfect if you need some padding in a smaller area, as all can be affixed with Velcro connecting along the edges to expand them either lengthwise or laterally. And if you’re opening your own karate studio or dojo, there’s the irreplaceable martial arts seamless flooring, which comes in pretty much every color imaginable.

If you’re looking for a good selection of quality kids tumbling mats, you can find all you need here! Your local super stores aren’t likely to stock much in the way of selection, other than, perhaps, something exceptionally ordinary and generic, being on the lower end of quality scale.
That’s one thing if you want something you don’t care will last a short while, perhaps to satisfy a kid’s passing fancy; but if you need excellent quality, durable tumbling mats for kids—or adults—take a look around at this online provider! There’s no need to compromise if your needs are specific, either.
Whether the needs are for mats taking on high impact tumbling from gymnastics, or if you are a martial arts instructor looking for martial arts mats, you can find precisely what you need—and usually in a nice selection of colors, sizes, and styles.
