Entrance Mats That Are More Durable and Eco-Friendly!

Posted on: January 22nd, 2014 by

Eco Products For Your Office!Back in the day, the out of pocket cost and the look of the mat were the only factors that played a major role in decision making process. In those days, material components mainly consisted of an olefin or polypropylene surface attached to some type of vinyl backing. Now, I’m not saying that anything is wrong with that, in fact, this type of mat is still used today.

However, the fact is, all entrance mats are NOT created equal. An entrance mat that is more of an all purpose mat may not be the best choice for your company, especially if you are selecting your entrance matting to protect your interior floors from damage by outside dirt and muck. In today’s world, construction and the functionality of design are now being given much more consideration during the purchase process then ever before.

One of the first things was to change the materials used in the production of the mats. Instead of vinyl backing, many manufacturers are choosing to use recycled rubber. Recycled rubber is a denser, more sturdy product that keeps its shape better. In addition, the face or surface of the newer mats are more and more being made of 100% PET’s (polyethylene terephthalate) a polyester type material made from post-consumer plastics.

Where the newer mat runners type of mats really shine is how they can provide a bi-layer surface. This surface will attract more dirt and hold more liquid than your run of the mill vinyl runner. Trapping more liquid will help reduce or even eliminate slip and falls. This mats advanced performance will also help protect your interior floors by being the first line of defense in keeping your floors from undue wear. In order to ensure that this occurs, you need to be sure that you are covering enough acreage for your mats to accomplish what they are designed to do.

Using recycled products does increase the price compared to the traditional fabric and vinyl mats, but the benefits are well worth it in the long run. We live in a time of environmentally conscious corporations, the newer recycled mats are the more eco-friendly choice. Also, if you are attempting to earn a LEEDS certification, it is mandatory. The newer type of mats have proven to be more durable and efficient in forming a barrier against the typical onslaught of outdoor contamination.

The proper amount of matting is variable dependent upon your location, as is the type of mat when figuring out the ideal chooses for your system.  For example, increasing  your mat size in places where high moisture and/or snow are prevalent such as the northeast, northwest and southeast is important. In addition, changing the composition and functionality of your entrance mat to lets say a sponge mat for example,  will help to absorb more liquid. Conversely, a scrapper mat is advanced in its ability to loosen and trap dirt. Typical the length would be a minimum of around 8’ to 12’ in a drier setting and a minimum of 20’ in areas where there is more snowfall or rain.

It is important to take care of your mats and maintain them properly. The cleaning of high performance mat systems requires a little more time and effort. Plan on vacuuming at least once per day in the high traffic area. It is also recommended to keep an identical back-up mat for when your regular mat needs shampooing or steam cleaning. Caring for your mats properly will cut down on the build-up of dirt and moisture. In places such as back east, with the heavy accumulation of salt, soil and sand you will want to consider getting a heavy duty pressure washer in addition to these mats.
