Rubber Playground SurfacesPosted on: May 8th, 2010 by Charles Pruett
Cousin to exercise mats are rubber playground surfaces. It used to be the playground, in elementary school or even daycare facilities was a place children could injured fairly easily; imagine having to tell kids to “slow down” or “not run” on a playground! The dangers of kids climbing on the “monkey bars” held potential for youngsters to fall and get seriously hurt. The fleeting thrill does not justify the potential hazards.
Fortunately, playgrounds of today are mostly rubberized. Rubber playground surfaces are similar in concept to many adult exercise facilities, which have installed rubber tiles for weight room flooring to absorb shock and reduce pain as well as fatigue on joints while exercising; so why should children, who are far more likely to be careless and have lesser developed balance, be any less deserving of what is not a luxury but a necessity? The truth is: “safety first” should have been the catch phrase it is today forty years ago.
